1930年代，许多波兰裔犹太人居住在德国。1938年10月28日，1.7万名犹太人在无预警的情况下在午夜被德国政府驱逐出境到波兰。一开始波兰政府拒绝收容他们，于是这批犹太人只好日夜待在德国和波兰边境，直到德国当局说服波兰政府同意他们入境。
